OBJECTIVES

The QSS Craft and Technology (C&T) Department comprises of two groups of professionals, the designers from Design and Technology unit and the chefs from Food and Nutrition Unit. The core belief of the C&T department in Queensway Secondary School is to provide a platform for the learners to become self-directed learners through experiential learning and innovative teaching.

The knowledge, skills and values acquired from Design and Technology education consists of three learning domains, namely, design appreciation, designing and making. This allows Queensway Secondary School to cater to the PIES (Physical, Intellectual, Emotions and Social) needs of learners and imbue them with the necessary 21st Century Competencies.

Food and Nutrition focuses on two learning domains, Nutrition and Health and Food Choice. The knowledge, skills and values acquired by Queenswayans helps them be more aware and recognise that their health is dependent on the quantity and quality of food eaten and functions to guide them in the selection of appropriate cooking methods to be used in food preparation.

The Sec 2 Express and Normal Academic students will have the opportunity to develop the 21st century skills through independent learning and self-disciplinary attribute. The 21st cc skills which they can develop are:

    Design thinking will also be used as a pedagogical strategy.

    Design Thinking is a process which includes the “building up” of ideas, with few or no limit on breadth during a brainstorming phase. This will greatly reduce fear of failure at the students’ side and encourage more participations in providing more inputs and participation form a wide variety of sources in the ideation phrases. Students will be encouraged to think “OUT OF THE BOX” and this will enable them to discover their ability and talent to discover the hidden elements and ambiguities in the situation. The Design Thinking process has 5 stages, mainly Empathize, Define, Ideate, Prototype and Test. The model in Figure 1 shows the details of each stage.

    Compared to the current design and technology model (Figure 2), design is always influenced by individual preferences, the design thinking method shares a common set of traits, mainly Creativity, User-centeredness, Curiosity, Awareness and Optimism.

    At the core of this process is a bias towards action and creation: by creating and testing something, you can continue to learn and improve upon your initial ideas.

    This programme supports the acquisition and application of innovative thinking in students as they learn through turning their ideas into reality through product creation.
